- Created by architect Yuji Yamazaki, this is all-inclusive luxury resort is powered solely by the sun.
- The Club Med Finolhu Villas in the Maldives are at the same time perfectly eco-friendly and remarkably luxurious, merging the best of two worlds.
The Club Med Finolhu Villas were built on a superbly preserved island in the Maldives. Don’t worry, though, this is not one of those stories where human takes over nature and ravish it with balance disrupting buildings and systems. The beauty of this resort is that it is at the same time beautifully luxurious and perfectly eco-friendly.
Envisioned by Japanese-American architect Yuji Yamazaki, the five-star resort represents “an architect’s dream come true”, as he himself has described it. The challenge of finding a way to bring world-class vacationing to the pristine Gasfinolhu Island, while keeping the project perfectly self-sufficient, was both extremely motivating and very rewarding.
About 67,000 square feet of solar panels produce about one megawatt of energy every day, which is actually more than it is required for the smooth functionality of the all-inclusive luxury resort. The extra power is saved for rainy days – literally so. There is also a desalinization system at Finolhu, which ensures plenty of fresh water for all types of activities.
In order to keep the unique beauty of the Maldives intact, the 52 plush villas are connected to a technologically-advance spine made of solar panels. The cells have not been hidden, but rather seamlessly integrated into the somewhat futuristic design.
Modern elements are beautifully combined with visual hints to the local architecture in the form of wave-shaped shingle roofs and an extensive use of wood. The interiors are tastefully decorated and very welcoming, and guests can benefit from luxe services such as in-villa spa treatments and 24-hour concierge. Free iPads and laptops are also available for the guests to use during their stay.
The villas range in size from 1,628 to 1,811 square feet, and they have 12-foot tall ceilings which give a sense of openness and wellbeing. With three rooms and a private pool, each villa is ideal for couples’ vacations or more intimate family outings.
