The Casio G-Shock MR-G Hammer Tone is the first luxury version of the iconic G-Shock model, and we love it. After having made a name for itself as an affordable, sturdy and highly reliable utility timepiece that could withstand some of the toughest challenges possible, the G-Shock is now ready to tickle the fancy of discerning watch collectors.

Every bit as tough as the previous models worn by firefighters, military men and women, and police officers, the new MR-G Hammer Tone watch is shock resistant, water resistant to up to 200 meters (656 feet), and it gets its power from the sun. Also, the built-in GPS receiver allows you to read a perfectly updated time regardless of the time zone in which you find yourself.

But is all that enough to justify the $6,500 price tag? Not exactly. But there is more to this watch than its impressive functionality. Limited to only 300 pieces, the Hammer Tone features a beautiful metal finish that is inspired by traditional Japanese armor and arm craftsmanship. The case and the bracelet are decorated using the so called tsuiki technique, which ivolves hammering small indentations into the metal surface for a beautifully textured result.

The design was developed together with master metalworker Bihou Asano, who represents the third generation of skillful craftsmen in his family. He is also the artist behind the hammered metal statues which decorate the Kyoto State Guest House.
