The 1929 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing Top Torpedo Convertible Coupe represents an extremely rare piece of automotive history, literary worth millions. Chassis 2199 is one of only six such beauties ever manufactured by California coachbuilder Walter M. Murphy, and auction experts have estimated its worth to around $3.5 million.

Its less exclusive sister model, the Duesenberg Model J Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe, was produced in a limited run of 25 units, and it still is a highly coveted collectible piece today. However, the Torpedo version is one of those rare gems for which passionate collectors are willing to wait a lifetime and pay a fortune to bring into their garages.

To make things even more exciting, this particular unit flaunts a series of unique features, such as a one-off tail design. It still has its original body, chassis and firewall, and it is ACD Club certified for Category One (D-119). The car was originally owned by California sportsman and automotive enthusiast David Gray, whose father had built a fortune by investing $10,500 in the new automobile company of Henry Ford.

Only four 1929 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing Top Torpedo Convertible Coupes still retain their original coachwork today, and chassis 2199 is one of them. All others are securely kept in private collections (one of which belongs to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum), and once this one goes under the gavel, the chances of it reemerging on the market are very, very slim.
